Trying to get an answer to my rear wheel being not in alignment with the front wheel and top tube of the frame

  • Well, here is what I have found out. The rear wheel sits 9/16" off centre and does not line-up with the front by factory design. The engine was developed first and then with wider tires everything was shifted around in order to keep the weight of the bike properly balanced. My frame turns out to be perfectly straight and is an optical illusion with regards to the rear loop under the seat appearing to be off to one side.

  • Have you figured this out yet? The thing is, that wth the QD hub, the brake and sprocket are all on the outside of the hub--outside the plane of the hub/wheel, tire--thus, the space on left side, between the shock and the wheel, is necessarily wider to accommodate the brake/sprocket assy. I have a 69 VS in my livingroom, and I just checked it--it is about the same as yours. As you point out, the center of the rear wheel must line up with the center of the front wheel--that is what is important.

  • Hey steve, it' Ian. We were at the Gastown show with our bikes side by side. I'll give you a call today.

  • I would assemble the speedo drive and spacer and snug the wheel up more, check engine spacer placement, the adjustment rings in place etc. I'll try and get a shot up of my '69 the same frame.
