Our dive group came across this lionfish as we were diving at Curacao with Caribbean Sea Sports from Marriott on February 1, 2010. If attacked, a lionfish delivers a potent venom via its needle-like dorsal fins. Lionfish are native to the Indian and Pacific oceans. It was being speculated that this is an off spring of about a half-dozen lionfish that washed into the Atlantic Ocean in 1992 when Hurricane Andrew smashed an aquarium tank in Florida.
