If you're using social media as a form of marketing, the worst thing you can do is not participate and just send them some link to your blog or an affiliate product.
When you begin to talk and give something people are much more responsive because they begin to relate to you as a person and not just some marketer.
If you use twitter, facebook etc talk to people, its actually the best market researching tool you can find, the best selling products come from listening to people.
