Don't get all defensive :). I'm french and I study french litterature, so I don't think french is poor, overall. We (the french) have much less vocabulary, but more nuance in our syntax, making french very apt for diplomacy.
Then, I'm quite certain that it is widely accepted amongst critiques that -he- did think french a poor language, and that it was his reason for using it in Fin de Partie. You can probably check it in any critique of fin de partie.
@Creylus I cannot let you say that French is "such a poor language" ! I'm french and I really love English language I write songs in english but poetry in french and let me tell you that french is NOT a poor language. They are different and both has its particularities. Beckett wrote in french because he wanted and because he found something that wasn't in english.
Just to set the record straight: Beckett wrote both this and "Fin de partie". He thought french fitted the theme of the play because french was such a "poor language", comparatively. So no translation involved, just creation in two languages.
