http://www.dslrfilmnoob.com/2011/01/30/dirt-cheep-monitor-project/ I was wondering around ebay, as i often do, looking for a second field monitor for my Canon t2i. What I came across was this $23 dollar dash mount backing camera.

I thought for $23 I would take a chance and see if i could make it work. Well after doing some dremel work and adding a little bit of glue, i managed to make something that is very handy and very cheap. For a grand total of $28 dollars in parts you can have a cell phone size monitor for your camera.

It isn't HD but it works well enough for framing your shots and seeing audio levels (t2i magic lantern hack). Since the t2i, 5d mark II, and 60d don't output HD when recording this little SD monitor will give you the same view as any other monitor in record mode.

There is more info on where to buy this little guy and how to put it together on the site: www.dslrfilmnoob.com

Equipment used in this video:
Canon t2i
Sigma 30mm f1.8

  • Hey Deejay,

Would you recommend something like this or the $44 Haier for use on a small steady cam (U-Flycam)?

I'm worried about weight but I'd also like the largest screen possible.

  • @StephenNorman Most people I've talked to are happier with the Haier monitor. The Haier monitor is a little over a pound so It depends on what size of steady cam you're using. If you have more then a pound of counter weights you could probably swap the haier out and still balance your steady cam pretty easy.

  • Yes but what is the point of using this small monitor if the monitor on your camera is about the same size?

  • @Darius12235 Having a small monitor allows you to mount it point towards you for the type of youtube videos I produce. It's also very handy when using a steady cam and when using your camera on a crane or operating your camera from a remote location.

  • how do you power this thing?

  • @BeatMuzikSquad 12 volt battery.
