A local cultural welcome from the President, Jessica, of this meeting. I spent the afternoon in a remote village around Gulu, Northern Uganda. With Invisible Children, I was invited to observe a Village Savings and Loan Association meeting. Prior to the "financial" part of the meeting, the members took at Functional Adult Literacy class. The topic: Writing Numbers 1-20. Kindergarten for 30-60 year olds!
At the VSLA meeting, members were required to give 2000 schillings (~$.44) each week. They keep the money in a lock box where three people each have a key to the three different locks. They tally the funds in basic log books, using X marks as tally marks for each 2000 schillings they put in - since, they are still learning to read/write numbers.
