This was just a quick test of the smart brush in Photoshop Elements 7. I converted the entire photo to black & white and then barely moved the brush across the flower petals. The smart brush did rather well in determining where to apply color. There were a couple of spots where the program added some green color to leaves in the background, but those are easily tweaked.

While Photoshop Elements 7 is no CS3 or CS4, I think it's a more than adequate photo editor, especially when used in conjunction with Lightroom 2.

  • CS3 had more features than Elements 7. For example, you could edit photos in 16-bit instead of downgrading them. Elements is fine for most people but if you're a pro or even a serious hobbyist you'll want something more robust like CS or Lightroom.

  • hi i have photoshop elements 7.0 and I don't have that tool. I don't have a brush with any looking wheel thing. Why is that?

  • You should have it. Every version of PSE7 that I've ever seen has it. Have you tried hovering your cursor over your tools to see their names?

  • I just bought the photoshop adobe elements 7 and do not see the smart brush anywhere?

  • It's there. Look on the left where all of your tools are. Move your cursor over the little icon of the brush with what looks like a cog wheel over it. If you hover over that icon, a pop up box says that it's the Smart Brush Tool. Right click the icon to choose between the smart brush and the detail smart brush.

  • point in this video?

  • great information, thank you

  • what is the difference between Photoshop CS3 with photoshop elements 7? ..

    which is better?

  • little explanation would be nice

  • @shortstackily2 no, PhotoShop is more extended.

  • hay is Photoshop Elements 7 and photoshop the same???

  • Okay... it looks simple enough, but when I try it.. Like.. for example, I tried using the smart brush spray tan.. and it refuses to let me do anything. I mean it literally does NOTHING. Am I doing something wrong? I click smart brush, find spray tan, click that, (I think its under portrait) and try clicking on the picture, and nothing happens.. Its so dang frustrating!!!

  • how did you do that?

  • do you know how can I single out color from a b/w photo like this in PS CS4? because i do not have PSE 7.
