In his latest book, "Henry: Virtuous Prince", David Starkey proposes that Elizabeth of York played a significant role in her son's education. Starkey even asserts that Elizabeth taught Henry to read and write and this is illustrated in the similar manner of handwriting endorsed by both. In his latest documentary on the life of Henry VIII, Starkey reiterates this point and provides primary material to indicate the impact Elizabeth played on her son's upbringing.

An example of Henry VIII's handwriting dating to his childhood can be seen at the current exhibit, "Vivat Rex!" at the Grolier Club, New York. The artefact in question is Henry's schoolboy copy of Cicero, in which he has written "Thys Boke Is Myne Prynce Henry":

  • It was Henry VII , not Henry VIII that was married to Elizabeth of York

  • ? And....

  • beauteful the video :-))

  • I like the style of the documentary - the acting bits are quite good.

  • I loved this doc. can't wait for the next part! I like the actress who plays Catherine - she actually has the right colouring for once! I also really iked who they got to play Elizabeth

  • I was impressed with the casting overall fortunately there was no cheesy acting and the actor playing Henry was good. So far two actresses (playing the first two wives) have been named so I am unsure whether all the wives will be depicted. I imagine that the last wives will be rushed through (I think the second episode deals with Henry's military affairs, the third probably with the King's Great Matter and the fourth on his last years).

  • Why couldn't they teach him not to divorce or kill his wives.

  • It's always nice to picture Henry VII's family as a happy one =)

  • I can't wait for Philippa Gregory's next novel, which will be on Elizabeth of York.

  • @littlemisssunnydale I'm kinda shocked you didn't know that it was Henry VIII. I have seen many of your videos about the Tudors. Any Tudor enthusiast would know that.

  • I wish there were more documentaries focusing on Elizabeth of York. I love her! I've been reading a lot about her over this past year, and she's really fascinating. It's a shame there isn't any films about her and Henry VII's story.

  • @mckfrr Haha. Henry, in order to be a good king, you must:

-treat your subjects with dgnity, fairness and respect

-treat your children, whether they be boys or girls, with love, affection, devotion, and discipline. In other words, know when to be a father, and when to be a king

-Don't divorce youe wives through bullshit reasons, and don't use those reasons to humiliate them.

    -DON'T EXECUTE YOUR WIVES!

  • I always liked Elizabeth of York. Nancy Lenz Harvey wrote a great biography about her.

  • I agree ^-^

  • starkey looks very amazed when he entered the room.
