Lawrence Lessig is a Professor of Law at Stanford University and chairman of the Creative Commons project. In this http://www.artistshousemusic.org interview, he shares his view on file sharing. He does not support sharing copyrighted material. However, Lessig does not condemn file sharing. Lessig shares that many artists believe that peer to peer file sharing benefits them. File sharing makes the Internet more democratic and efficient. For instance, peer-to-peer file sharing is the most economical way of distributing film. File sharing is an essential part of the future of the Internet.

  • file sharing is INEVITABLE because to the technology we use today. it is IMPOSSIBLE to fight it. and the artists are starting to understand that by giving out more and more albums/songs for free. they need to understand that the money needs to be made with selling merchandise and going to shows... they are victimes of our own technology and there is no way to avoid it.. so support your arists in every other possible ways!

  • @Foslopac You're so right. Copyright in its current form is a kind of squatting that devalues our shared culture and public domain. The laws have been manipulated (after death + 70 years) so the majority of copyrights are owned by non-persons like corporations who had no role in its creation.

  • Does anobody know about a lengthly documentary on music file sharing? I need it for a school project.

  • Intellectual property is a farce. The entire racket should be scrapped so people can get focus on productive things in the world. Cry babies want other people to give them resources that are unnecessary to enjoy the content created.

  • @smsheard Yes, anything is better when care if given, be it money, or lets say time and attention.

  • so music is better with more money spent on it?

  • Downloading music is not stealing. IF you steal something the owner loses something. By downloading the originals still remains to respective owners of material. IF someone claims a song as theirs - now THAT'S stealing. I 100% download music, but if i like an artist/band i go to their shows, I pay for ticket, take some friends with me (more tickets sold) and if i really, really like the bands i also buy a t-shirt. Where is the problem??

  • basically what it comes down to is : do you have respect for your artist?
