In Catholicism.. the term Godfather was the person chosen to take the place of the father should he not be present. It was the Godfathers duty as well as to guide the child in religious upbring hence the term God father and had nothing to do with being powerful like in the movie. however, person being Godfather was a person of respect and with some religious influence... I know becuase I am a godfather....
