@Lisa4Me2 Well said. I hate to see people destroy them. When I was young, a copperhead managed to get into my uncle/s basement. Rather than kill it, he managed to get it into a pickle tub, and proceeded to take it outdoors where he let it loose. It was a good lesson that always stuck with me.

@chidoridemon1 Cotton mouth bites rarely if ever result in fatalities. They just want to be left alone, just like any other animal.

In the spring when the snakes are sunning themselves on the bayou on fallen trees we go in a boat with 22 hollow points and tear there asses up,around 20 to 30 a trip, usually in April or May is a good time to go. Because while fishing off the bank or frogging at night or hunting in the fall these snakes are everywhere.

I think back to what my platoon sergeant told me years ago: "leave 'ol Jake alone!"

@Radwoem That's the point--I WOULDN'T want then reproducing in the subways. Just kill and eat, live happily ever after, then die. THE END.

@DaboiaRusselli You are bang on. When a cottonmouth gapes you should definitely know it's the true thing (esp. after seeing the fang-sheaths!). Rattlesnakes use rattles, cottonmouths use the gape. It's all a nice way of saying, "I can send you to the hospital, now get out of here and let me go about my business." An average hospital visit for an envenomation is around $30,000+ for humans (not so with animals because usually the treatment is just steroids not antivenom).

@OneWithGuns93 Interesting line of thought. The dog and snake were doing exactly what they were built to do. A dog is curious, a snake will defend itself. You've previously had this experience, and you let it happen again? I feel sorry for your dogs and the snakes on your land. Get a fence and line it with Dr. T's Snakeaway, it has finally been proven to work at keeping snakes away (especially our pitvipers). I hope your dog makes it.

@rabidrabbitshuggers You wouldn't want them sterile, how would they reproduce? And a snake's venom is for predigestion before ingestion. So if you mean remove the venom...well that would spell death for the snake (the stomach acids of venomous snakes is not as strong as that of non-venomous species, that's why they need the venom) due to "belly rot". In captivity a "de-venomed" snake's food has to be twice frozen and thawed to help in cellular breakdown of food items.

Cats are better at catching rodents than snakes.
