A concert by ragtime king Max Morath on May, 23 1963.

First song: I'm Certainly Living a Ragtime Life (Including: Dill Pickles)
"This 1900 rouser made good sense - then. In those days, when ragtime was new, thousands of entertainers were "living a ragtime life" - traveling around the country, playing and singing the new syncopated music. But today?
I mean, here I am living a ragtime life in the 1960's. "Max Morath," I once overheard, "is completely out of touch with his environment."

-Max Morath

Second Song: Grizzly Bear
"The first of the ragtime dances, The Grizzly Bear was followed by a tousand vaiants including the Kangaroo Hop, the Camel Walk, the Chicken Scratch, the Lame Duck and, of course, the Turkey Trot. Written in 1910, with words by Irving Berlin (a young sensation), the Grizzly Bear set the pace. Scandalous, you know. The dancers hugged each other, like bears.
But then, in all these ragtime dances the partners mimiked the traits of the animal the dance was named for. In the Turkey Trot they flapped their elbows and sretched their necks. I've neve figured out what they did in the Kangaroo Hop."

  • @KaylaAndAshleyShow If you're related to him then that means you're related to me. He's my great uncle.

  • Hey, Max! Greg Monks here! As I said once before, you've been a great inspiration to me. You're the reason I write and play my own brand of rags today!

  • The best music.l Max Morath was on public TV in our area approx 1961 My daughter thur nite she knew when he was coming on she would get her small rocking chair in front of TV " Mom Our Man is on" She was 3 years old.. We loved the show. was never long enough. .
