The return to nature, one of the main romantic themes, takes form in this, a work as classical as it is strange. In a texture somewhere between the orchestal, the wind trio, the quartet... the music sets forth a diversity of recourses to shape an ideological theme to which it resorts intermittently throughout its development.
This Op.22, an attempt, a specific experiment, a confinement in the strict canons of sonata of the forces of the Earth and of Man, a straight-jacketing of chaos (useless effort!). And he will return to this issue in the near future, but stripped of the by-now standardised old mould of sonata, placing his creation in a spiralling journey in which rigidity gives way to radical experimentation with the material.
Classical sonata form never reached such expansion as in early Beethoven; the word sonata was never imagined labelling what happened afterwards.
