My favourite cricketer of all time; before I was old enough to play, Derek provided many hours of entertainment and enjoyment for me and my family when we were season ticket holders at Trent Bridge. A test batting average of 33 might not seem much but the runs he saved in the field must have got that average up to about 50. A real character !
Randall's autobiography, "The Sun Has Got Its Hat On", written many (many) years ago, is definitely worth a read if you're a cricket person. It's fascinating stuff from a supremely talented cricketer whose style was always humility and modesty rather than bombast, arrogance and bling.
Mind you, I'm probably part of a pretty small party that actually owns a copy of it - and a signed first edition at that! But it's probably on Amazon these days if you're really desperate to get it - for 1p. Sad.
Remember when they were playing out time in a drawn Test match he bowled an over impersonating (very well) the England bowlers. His impersonation of Bob Willis was very memorable. Bit of a character old DR; superb fielder too.
He was great to see in the covers if my memory serves me right.....he was also very useful with a spanner and I recall one time when we had broken down on side a road and things were looking quite bleak indeed. Suddenly Derek swings into action wit spanner and gets the old girl firing again in the rain an all. Another time I recall we were becalmed at sea and Derek brought out a trusty spanner and before we knew it he had bla bla bla bla...
A great man - a brilliant and highly entertaining cricketer - In my time he was probably the ultimate fielder that inspired many a young lad. His run out of Sunil Gavaskar? around 1979 still runs through my mind whilst fielding.
He did much for his local community, including umpiring for Cropwell Scouts (he even gave me a lift home from Radcliffe one summer evening in his Austin Allegro before he went to Aus for the Ashes!) Super bloke
This man holds one of my favourite sporting moments of all time. It wasnt this game, but a catch he made that was outstanding and sticks in the memory, not seen it in years. Might of been South Africa, but the catch was Magnificent and the stuff of Legend.
Good old Rags, great to see him again! I remember seeing England v. West Indies at Scarborough in 1976 for a one-dayer, it was the day the heatwave ended, it was bitterly cold. Rags came on as a substitute fielder and was right out on the boundary in front of my father and me. I remember him humming foolishly and have a laugh and a joke with some of the crowd, and his fielding was awesome. He was a real entertainer and a proper good soul.
Thanks for that snippet! Quite simply, Derek is one of my heroes! The greatest fielder - in any position - and a much underrated batsman. Strange to think that he scored a test century against Abdul Qadir's Pakistan when opening the innings! More video of Derek, please!!
Derek Randall was a truly great Batsmen. Unfortunately he was too often put out of position in the England team at number 3 when he scored most of his runs in county cricket further down the order. He was the best fielder I have ever seen.

ALDERMANOFFOUNTALL. I almost agree, Derek was only bettered in the fielding department by Colin Bland imo.

I can remember him taking wickets in the field whilst still on the run. Fantastic Cricket player.

Not crazy horse, that was Emlyn Hughes, Nijinsky. But more often Rags. Great man!

When he was good ( in the 70s ) he was very good.
Gower , Randall , Botham - a lot of pleasure & fun in their cricket unlike Boycott , Brearley zzzzzz

never seen two such controlled, elegant pull shots
perhaps Sobers or Gower, but cannot think of anyone else

One of my favourite players
-Dennis Liillee rated him as one of the best batsmen he ever bowled at
-then came Gatting?
to rob us of watching many more years of batting genius
Sorry Mike Gatting, but Derek Randall, was streets ahead of you on class

Yep a great cricketer and a nice guy too. Between him and Jonty Rhodes for the best fielder I have ever seen.
