Maybe you're right. Beauty is in the ear of the listener. She has a sweet voice and does beautifully on many other songs. To me there's just something missing here. Can't help my reaction. However I didn't ever get used to Bea Arthur singing Old Man River either.
Apples and oranges! You like or you don't. That's all. Anyway, the music doesn't care who sings it and even though I posted a long time ago. I am glad people are still enjoying performing the old, old songs.

@LaerdBryn i beg to differ! i do not think that this song is in any way better sung by a man...not after hearing this version for sure!!! awesome! love her voice!

just spellbinding. A different take on an old classic is always worth pausing and listening. I will check the other songs by this outstanding singer.

There is ambiguity in the lyrics so that it is difficult to know for any certainty as to whom Weatherley makes sing some lines, whether the Picardy woman Colinette or her British soldier-lover recently forced to leave her side for a Picardy trench, where, as both principals know, the soldier may be cut down as a rose in summer heat, though there be "one rose that dies not in Picardy; 'tis the rose that I keep in my heart." That line may express a sentiment that can be sung by either principal.
Please keep in mind that this is an early twentieth century English music hall song.
Also, it is usually sung by a man probably because it was written for the male voice. Kudos to this lady for doing it. She must really like it. Yes, it's better by a man just as many other songs are better done by women. Summertime is better by a woman the same way Old Man River is better sounding by a man. Ha, ha, just had to throw in that. applause to the lady.
