    Maybe you just need be more careful and cunning with the system you build. These days it's not that hard or expensive to get a really good sounding package. 1. Sources: Just make sure it is lossless like old-school CDs better than crappy iTunes. 2. DAC (noobs call it a soundcard) external outside your computer. 3. Decent Amp based on Speaker or Headphones requirement. To power headphones DAC & Amp no need to spend more than 200USD for avg person.

    Haven't tried this particular variety of Audiotechnica headphones, but the M-50s they're so high quality that the low quality audio files won't do them justice in gaming or music.

    Audio quality needs more improvement at the software end than the hardware end right now

    Not for music, great specifically for gaming. But please do not use it to enjoy music. It's like using a tractor as a car. Plausible but not meant for that purpose.
