1930 recording is the first of Rubinstein's two authorized recordings of "Dance of Terror", the fifth movement of El amor brujo.
~~~
"El amor brujo", composed by Manuel de Falla, was initially commissioned in 1914-15 by Pastora Imperio, a renowned flamenco gypsy dancer, and was scored for a chamber group, then re-scored as a symphonic suite, and eventually as a ballet.
The work is distinctively Andalusian in character with the songs in the Andalusian Spanish dialect of the Gypsies and having 13 movements:
- Introduction y escena ('Introduction and scene')
- En la cueva ('In the cave')
- Cancion del amor dolido ('Song of suffering love')
- El aparecido ('The apparition')
- Danza del terror ('Dance of terror')
- El circulo magico ('The magic circle')
- Romance del pescador ('Romance of the fisherman')
- Danza ritual del fuego ('Ritual fire dance')
- Escena ('Scene')
- Danza del juego del amor ('Dance of the game of love')
- Pantomima ('Pantomime)
- Cancion del fuego fatuo ('Song of the will-o'-the-wisp')
- Final - las campanas del amenecer ('Finale the bells')
Thanks to the uploader! I had never heard this one by Rubinstein. I know several of his "interpretations" of Spanish "nationalistic" music, in some cases from live concerts. What one can abundantly (and horrifyingly...) confirm here is my long held opinion that Rubinstein's interpretations of Spanish ("nationalistic") music are mere pieces of trash! (in Spanish: "basura"). This one is an especially illuminating document... Don't mean any offence to those who like them this way! Just my opinion.
