Victoria Jordanova's "Moon," combines lyrics from an 11th century Chinese poem by Su Shi with a Classical approach to the piano part. The song was written as an addition to the original "New York Love Songs" cycle, upon Chai's suggestion. It bespeaks a love that languishes, lingers, and hopefully survives separation. Its sound is Asian without obviously referencing any tropes, beyond elegantly shaped and refined modal lines in both voice and piano. Only near its end does a livelier, dancing spirit enter to suggest a happy ending to the longing.
Performed by brilliant Jenny Q Chai, recorded for the ArpaViva album "New York Love Songs."
