Tragic, deeply moving Yiddish ghetto lullaby; sung by a mother to her child and set to the drumbeat of a forced march of deportation during WWII. This is heavy stuff! The refrain will haunt you for a long time.

  • Thank you for sharing this - I've never heard it before. One criticism: the words "noch feel hingerik vi int" should be 'nas un hingerik vi hint' - 'wet and hungry like dogs'. Otherwise thanks again - very moving.

  • Thanks for the correction which will help other viewers. I took the Yiddish from the LP notes and modified the English translation to be as bleak and spare as the song itself.

  • Thank you for your comment. The individual and personal live experiences of this terrible time are, to me, more moving than pictures of piled bodies. This song captures just one of the six million such memories.
