  • Can you explain how you started with an item that cost 2000 dollars take 20% off of it and get 1600???

  • @TrishMcDarby 20% is equal to 1/5 of a number. If you divide 2000 by 5, you will get 400...so 1/5 of 2000 is 400. If you take that away, you have 1600.

  • ok HERE is a short version of this whole thing!

-- subtract the percent off from 100

    100 - 20 = 80

-- divide the sale price by the answer

    1600 divided by 80 = 20

-- multiply that answer by 100, and you have the original price

    20 x 100 = 2,000

    Victory! :3

  • You took the hella long way lol. I got with the: is/of so 120/80=45/x so you cross multiply 120/x = 80x45 and then 120x/120 = 3600/120 so you divide 3600/120 and get 30. I hate fractions so much lol so I just find the is/of fairly easy and quick to use.

  • how are these problems gonna help me in life ?

  • @tookittomygrave i will use your method instead

  • Your method is far too long and involved too much unnecessary steps .My ten year old daughter was able to do this in at least 40 seconds .Students should be able to replicate things like this in everyday scenario . A simple algebraic equation does the trick.I see no need to convert to fractions or even include the Y in your last sum.

  • Why make this so difficult ,this question would be too easy to appear on a 11+school exam in the UK.

    1600=80%

X = 100%..cross multiply and it should take you about 30 seconds .X is the unknown.lol

  • i got lost as soon as he opend his mouth lol but reading the comments i understood a little...

  • @TookItToMyGrave : Really helpful thanks :)

  • Im so confused on how to do the second part of the question :/

  • NEVER MIND I FIGURED IT OUT THNX

  • CAN U EXPLAIN HOW IS THE EASIEST WAY TO FIGURE OUT THE FRACTION OF THE PERCENT? 80% AND U REDUCED IT TO 6/5
