(c)1969 Words & Music John C. Fogerty, track#5 on album "Green River"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I see a bad moon a-rising, I see trouble on the way
I see earthquakes and lightning, I see bad times today
Don´t go ´round tonight, it´s bound to take your life
There´s a bad moon on the rise [2. harmonica break+
I hear hurricanes a-blowin´, I know the end is comin´ soon
I feel rivers overflowin´, I hear the voice from rage and ruin#
+Hope you got your things together, hope you are quite prepared to die
Looks like we´re in for nasty weather, one eye is takin´ for an eye#
In Rolling Stone issue 649, John Fogerty explained that the lyrics were inspired by a movie called The Devil And Daniel Webster, in which a hurricane wipes out most of a town. This is where he got the idea for the words "I feel the hurricane blowin', I hope you're quite prepared to die." Overall, he said the song is about the "apocalypse that was going to be visited upon us."
This has been covered by Nirvana, Bruce Springsteen, Bo Diddley, Type O Negative, 16 Horsepower, Reels, Spitballs, Blue Aeroplanes, Lagwagon, Battlefield Band, Ducky Boys, Acoustic Shack, Ventures, Meteors, and Rasputina.
"Bad Moon Rising" offers a complete social cataclysm. Fogerty sings in an Old Testament prophet´s voice, warning the righteous and unrighteous alike. He sings like these images and ideas - the earthquakes, the lightning, rivers overflowing, the voice of rage and ruin, the dread in the bass line - are pulled out against his will. He sings, in short, like the truth of the matter is just coming clear and leaves him with about half a prayer: "Hope you have got your things together / Hope you are quite prepared to die." Now the nature that offered solace in "Green River" has itself a sinister purpose. (Davie Marsh, 2000)
