IBM engineers are demonstrating the integration of Lotus Sametime with the several virtual world platforms.
A 3-D meeting can be launched directly from within Sametime, creating a virtual meeting space that uses Sametime capabilities available in a virtual environment, including presentation tools, access to the avatar's inventory and full avatar functionality demonstrating the business value virtual environments can bring to the future of unified communications.
lol... :) enjoyed it!

lol They just want to have some fun...
They probably put an online video game nerd or a sims crazy fan in charge of projects creativity..........

sure, tho I cant link in the comments, just Google "3d warehouse" and its the first result.
It's a repository of community built 3d models made with Google's sketch up application. And there are 1000's of models built for fun or other.
The scope here is vast, but the IBM demo is very "narrow sighted" imo.
There's not much use for all these models yet, but it does solve the lack of asset problem :)
Not hard to imagine a social application "made from google" using all these assets.

I agree with you, if they have a 3D library which im pretty sure they do being that theyre IBM, then I can see enormous potential for this, especially if the 3d object is interactive as well and you can do a 3d hardware troubleshoot before you do the real thing. That would be a breakthrough, and IBM is fully capable. It would take an IBM & NI(National Instruments)& collaboration to make this a reality. Can you imagine? I havent seen 3D warehouse got a good link to it?

Depends, i have worked with IBM's web sphere in the past. and its a beast. Tho, IBM are pretty good with the support.
The practicalities of this are still in question. having someone develop 3d assets is just not going to happen for 99.99% of companies.
If IBM has 3d assets of their servers for the sole use of troubleshooting, then fine. however, that is such a tiny niche in the market, its hardly worth mentioning at all.
I would keep an eye on Google's 3d warehouse tho.

I personally see the success in this. However, it would only work with IBM products. IBM already has a 3D model of every server they ever built, and every part they build. This would give them a HUGE library of parts that can be stored on there server and loaded to your 3D world at your request. IBM does a good job at doing the work for you with there products. I have had many IBM products and I realize one thing, these are by far the easiest machines to troubleshoot. why because they help u out

I think you missed the point, in the example, the guy has questions about the server configuration, not about installing the hardware.
And despite your opinions on the real "IT" world, this is a common question to ask.
However, i agree with you that this system sucks, and the practicalities of actually using such a system outweigh its benefits.
Wouldn't a video system work better? creating 3D assets to demonstrate such a trivial thing would be a pain in the ass. What company would bother?

Just a thought, why would ANYONE really want to use this? I mean seriously, the example they give would/should never happen. If the person is responsible for swapping hardware then they should know exactly what needs to be done. If they don't then they shouldn't be doing it.
I don't know about IBM but I would never let anyone who didn't know how to replace a component in a rack anywhere NEAR my servers.
kleinbradham is right, they should spend time developing to make it not suck.

Ya needs loads of RAM to run. I guess most IBMers dont even use the latest version of notes or sametime. Most of them use web version or when nothing else is running !!!
