Every god had a multilayered personality which are archetypes of human condition (positive and negative aspects). Pagans were more individualistic in the sense they did not believe in mercy or charity, nor they believed in rulers (read outside rulers). And revenge (and feuds) was a big big thing. Eventually kings got convinced of the social control benefits of Chistianity...
