Just a quick little set of Jerry tunes here in the dressing room before a show. Couldn't remember the second tune when it came to it, so flubbed a little there. Tunes are Brenda Stubbert's/Just Cruizin'.
For those of you who do not know, the great Cape Breton fiddler Jerry Holland is currently in the hospital with bone cancer in his leg. The will be amputating it soon. This means a huge loss of income for Jerry due to the fact that he will miss most or all of his summer concerts for the year, not to mention the pain and trauma of losing his leg. Jerry has written some of most popular and oft-played tunes in the trad genre, his tunes are known and played in every part of the world. He is also one of sweetest and most generous gentleman you will ever meet. I am including this little set of Jerry's tunes as a tribute and also to spread the word about his condition in the hopes that the many musicians that Jerry has touched over the years will be willing to help him out. Here's a note I received from a good friend of Jerry's:

Dear friends,

I'm passing along this message from Jerry Holland I am planning a series of fund-raising concerts and events, because he will undoubtedly be losing some work, although we all have our fingers crossed about his summer.
You can also at any time send a check made out to him, and mail to me,
Beth Telford, at 1060 Bent Hill Rd, Braintree, VT 05060. He has a local
account where I can make deposits for him. Musicians, please email or call me
if you're willing to help. As you all know, Jerry is not only a great
musician but one of the finest friends a person could ever have.
Please keep him in your hearts. He's the last person who would ask for help,
but he needs it, and that's what friends are for.

Thanks, everyone,

Beth

  • I believe the second tune is called CBC's GLEN and CARL

  • @vexakin,

That is also a great Jerry composition, but quite a different tune. This is one he called "Just Cruzin". All the best,

    Zac

  • hey is there any books you can recommend for learning the pipes i live in Newfoundland (the most Irish place outside of Ireland) and I don't think there are any teachers around so if i were to pick it up I would be on my own

    thanks

    by the way superb piping

  • Heather Clarke's New Approach to Uilleann Piping is a great book and it comes with a CD. The teaching videos from na piobaire uilleann are worthwhile as well. Remember, this is an aural tradition, so learning by ear, not books is the best way to go. And having other pipers to help you is recommended. Where in the province are you based? I wouldn't be surprised if there are pipers near you.

  • Em what make are your pipes?

  • Kirk Lynch and Tim Britton.

  • Wonderful ! you are a great musician !

  • @LunasCraincloud everyone here is an irish descendant. and the culture is very similar still. look up some pictures you ll be surprised how similar it looks

  • Amazing very good :) love love love it

  • Lad, the BEST way to end its misery is to gouge and then slash at the fat upper baggy region just below its tubular sphincter...prepare for a lengthy clean-up... it eets haggis

This beautiful song reminds me of just before Mel Gibson kicks Archibald Cunningham's ass in the duel. Or, maybe just before Jessica Lange gets boffed by a non-husband character, for the umpteenth time in the moovee...

  • how many instruments and flutes do you play???!!! and you play very well ^_^

  • @pinkfloydn1fan Boston don't count? LOL

  • @pinkfloydn1fan I found a teacher in italy so I think you'll find one in Newfoundland !!!

  • @pinkfloydn1fan i agree with legertymusic its better to learn by ear and get tips from other pipers on things like ornamentation and good piping is all about ornamentation it would help if you had previous experience with a tin whistle too i tried once to teach someone who had no experience and it was a nightmare and as said before i am sure there must be piper near you if the japanese have them they must be everywhere and good luck with learning i hope you have lots of fun

  • BRILLIANT
