"I cherish the memory that my grandson asked me the other day when he said 'Grandpa, were you a Hero in the war?'. 'Grandpa' said no. But I served in a Company of Heroes"

@transmoderata Given the situation they were in I highly doubt that you would have done any different at that time unless you are a coward and become a deserter. They were born german and they were patriots just like any normal men at the age of around 18 and they didn´t know that there were death camps since the government made them believe they were being attacked (Hitler Polen attack speech etc). Its easy to pretend to be a nobler and better human being today given all the information.

@Syco2k3 They were Germans, not Nazi's, but I agree man.

@Syco2k3 I strongly disagree. They can and should be blamed for following Hitler's orders. If you're receiving orders from a genocidal mad man, I don't care how scared you are, you either defect or die trying. Hitler was a genius when it came to propaganda, but that doesn't make the idiots who got dragged into his machine innocent. They had the same problem that the people Hitler persecuted did: they didn't take action for themselves, or even think for themselves.

@Gruenkreuz100 So was mine, except at Gold Beach :)

that anti-aircraft gun was almost as big as my penis!
The Nazi soldiers fought well too. They should not be blamed for Hitler's orders.

My Grandpa was there at this day! He was a member of the Panzer Lehr-Division under General Gerd von Rundstedt.
