@scottishrailways Hiya, yer, this was a lucky catch - an amazing thing to see. Unfortunately, due to my kackhandedness I missed the best bit where the entire tank disappeared in a cloud of diesel fumes. Not every day you get to see a bit of tank-clag!

@extankie1 Got it one, remember the sight picture, look for the splash, up and on the target,bingo! Your Commander was old school and the best of the best! It wasn't a trick you learn't it was a trade, good gunners do not need artificial aids like lasers or ranging guns! they come natural, they can blow a flea off a cow's arse at two miles away! @Zapata935 Didn't get to use the .50cal, but my dad did on Cents. IFCS had only been fitted for 2 year's when I joined (Chieftain MK9 and MK12). We trained to use full systems in the GTS and slowley removing all electronics and all other helpers over a period and being forced to judge ranges, use to MK86 or ever looking down the barrel. The best trick I learned was, laying the fall of shot on the target if you missed the first time. My commander was an old school CVR(T) Gun Inst.

@extankie1 I recently met a bunch of lancers, who have what they call "Tiger 2's", they mean Challenger mark 2. They asked me about the .50 ranging gun, as if I was some sort of museum relic. "But what if the target moves between the strike burst and laying on of the main armament!" I told them that Chieftain gunnery was all about remembering the sight picture! I will never forget the look on their faces, you mean you have use your head and not laser beams!

@Stewatyou Alright mate, I was in 1RTR. I've watched this vid a few times and from a Dvr Mechs point of view, I'd love to batter the driver for his outrageous gear changing. Poor tank.

@Zapata935 As being ex R.E.M.E as an A mech with 4RTR in the Eighties i spent all my time on Chieftain and I comply completely to your Comments, this Chieftain doesnt sound all too good towards the end of the Video. It was an awesome sound, loved those things. Apparently the Exhaust system was speicifically designed to produce this sound for the scare factor ( Phsychological warfare )

@Hanglands As an ex-chieftain crewman it saddens me deeply that such a great piece of kit is in the hands of such a knobhead driving that tank. The whole point of Chieftain was it's ability to blow away all opposition on the move with special APDS ammunition. What you see on this film clip was a special beast being paraded around and tormented in my view! like an animal at the Royal Show!
