Sorry but I don't agree with you. Mariah has been at the top of her game and is till around doing it big just at 39yrs old too. Mariah hasn't even been in the music business for 20yrs yet and has achieved so much more than others that have been around much longer. Whitney has been around since like 84, Mariah has been out since 1990 and has accomplished so much in less time.

@donn409 The only time Mariah's marriage to Tommy has benefited her was when she was married to him. If anything that has now worked against her and I'm sure Tommy is not doing her any favors since the divorce so a claim that her marriage to him still carries clout is incorrect. If she had any clout with Island Def Jam is because her 2005 release went Diamond.

@donn409 If she stays on that label. She was already past her prime when The Emancipation of Mimi sold 10 million and she obtained the top song of the decade for the second decade in a row. Not all older artists are tossed to the wayside. Sade just sold 500,000 copies her first week and she has been out since the 80's.

My other point is, because of the facts I've presented, Carey topping the singles charts 18 times is not that great considering she sold considerably less to get the same number of number ones that Elvis did on the Billboard Charts from 1956 to 1969.

As she nears 40 the executives at her label will become apprehensive about promoting what they consider a "older" artist. They'll want to push much younger artists and their music. This could be what finally sends Carey into another depression for the last time.

Carey is once again stuck in a creative slump with her last three albums sounding the same. As Carey gets older and her marriage to former Sony Music President, Tommy Mattola fading into the past she will have less clout with the record executives at her label, Island Def Jam. The same thing happened before she left Sony. Even Virgin bought out her contract after one or two albums because of her music lacking "something different" .

In the 2000s Billboard changed their rules yet again to include downloads. My problem with counting downloads is that they are given away to promote a artist's upcoming album and therefore should be disqualified from being used to create Billboard's singles charts. Carey's last 3 number one songs benefitted from download giveaways to promote her last two albums. Her current album hasn't faired as well garnering no number ones.
