Earlier this year, congestive heart failure patient Thomas Joyner came very close to dying. A ventricular assist device called the Heartmate II kept him alive until he could receive a heart transplant. Physicians at the Medical University of South Carolina say patients with advanced heart failure have options in treatment that they may not realize are available.
