The total physical response is a great strategy for teaching ELLs because they can begin to associate the meaning of the words and sentences with the movements and pictures that they already understand, without necessarily knowing the language. Doing the actions themselves involves a different part of the brain that is otherwise uninvolved and strengthens the learning and understanding as they develope their vocabulary in the new language.
