  • How sad it is to be a clown. To not even be able to be a man, to need to hid one's sorrows behind a mask of a smile, and to have to turn even one's bitterness into the amusement of others. Such is a life I am not willing to live. Thank goodness I was not born to be a clown, or there but for the grace of god go I.

  • La comedia e finita...

and the ridi pagliacco theme on the top

    gets me every time

  • Great heart, great voice, great passion, great Interpretation! In a word.. Great Placido! Bravo.

    Kisses from Italy

  • "How can I perform? In this state, I no longer know what I say or do... But I must try! Are you not a man? Bah! You're just Pagliaccio! ... Put on the make-up, and the grimace, the audience pays and wants to see you laugh. And of Harlequin steals your Colombina, laugh and they will applaud! Laugh, clown, laugh, at your shattered love, laugh at the pain tearing your heart..."

  • Canio (tne main character) has just found out that his wife is cheating on him, and yet although his heart is breaking, he must continue to play the clown in the evening's peformance.

What makes it even worse is that in the masque they are performing, Canio is suppose to play a Clown (Pagliacco) whose wife Colombina (played by Canio's wife) is cheating on him. Too much like in real life.
