In this video, Mahalo's Photoshop expert Justin Zagri explains how you can best organize your layers before refining your character placement.
Photoshop Tutorial - Organizing
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Once you've created a nice, rounded mask, you're ready to move your subject into the movie poster. Before you do so, however, you're going to need to do a lot of refinement to make the character fit in better.
You'll need to get yourself organized first and make it so that whatever changes you make to your pictures aren't permanent.
First, make sure both layers are selected since you had to use two separate masks. With both layers selected, press the Link Layers button at the bottom of the Layers panel. This will ensure that you won't have to worry about moving one layer around without harming the other.
With your layers linked, click and drag the image of the subject into the movie poster. At first, the character may look out of place, but as you move on with the tutorials you will tweak and refine certain adjustments to help the subject fit in quite nicely.
In the Layers panel it's a good idea to organize your layers into folders. For instance, all layers pertaining to the cityscape could go into a folder called City. All background layers could be organized into a Background folder.
As you continue to add elements to your poster, there are going to be many more images added and folders will be integral to your workflow.
At the bottom of the Layers panel is a button called Create a new group. Click on this, then click on the folder that is created to rename it. Name it the character's name it corresponds to so you can avoid confusion. Shift+mouse-click on the two layers of the character and move them into that folder.
Be careful how you order the layer folders in the Layers panel, because the ordering will affect the placement of objects in your poster. In Photoshop, the highest layer in the Layers panel will always overshadow the other layers below it.
