Looking to learn a little bit about Parrotlets- I came upon one in a bad state of neglect today and am seriously considering going back to get her tomorrow. She's a female and is 7 months old. She is only about 2/3 of the size of the other Parrotlets I have seen and is all plucked to down on her chest. She is in a tiny (travel-size) cage with one perch and one bedraggled toy. Poor thing seems just miserable. Any tips or advice for a first-time Parrotlet mom?

aw did you end up getting her?

Hard question. Depends if you have experience with birds. Parrotlets can be very territorial, aggressive & everything a big parrot can be if they are not handraised & are fearful. They can be trained, however, if they were not handled as a baby it may be difficult to 'tame' them. Depends on their temperament also though.

An excellent website I have thoroughly read thru when I first got Koolaid, was "The Parrotlet Ranch" it's the first hit on google.

Sandee Molenda is basically the first person to delve into the whole history & international 'activist' type of person for parrotlets since they started breeding them. I believe since they are pretty new into the aviculture world, they still have a lot of their 'wild' behaviour, in my opinion. THey need a lot of stimulation, they can bite hard but that could be unlearned by not reacting to their biting. They eat like cockatiels, and enjoy fresh foods. Their beak is strong & they are smart:)

she still didn't have any new feathers on her chest. Do you think that the woman who has her is right and that she might just be molting? Regardless she is not in a good situation and I will get her out of it if I can. Just interested to hear an opinion from someone who knows rather than the woman who has her, who knows very little.

No, I don't think it's a molt. It could've started from a molt, but the end result is plucking feathers. Could also have an internal infection. Or just develped over bordeom. Is it a blue mutation? My blue parrotlet started plucking because of a bacterial infection, but when put on antibiotics, develped an allergic reaction & Plucked his whole chest. Apparently it's common in blue parrotlets to pluck for some reason. Pet stores can charge almost double the price of a breeder.

@DreamAnImagine parrotlets have vicious bites, harder thean a med size bird sometimes. They hv a tendency to hang on to the bite to u prob have already experienced that. It can last a couple weeks to a few months.

Yes, she is a blue. I may call back tomorrow and pass on the information- don't know if the woman will care or not. I will make her another offer. I know a good avian vet here I could take her to. I hate to pay out the nose for her though- for various reasons. I really dislike encouraging pet stores that do such a poor job by paying top price for their animals. On the other hand, I want to get her out of there. I am feeling quite conflicted.

I haven't gotten her yet- though I am working on it. The woman who has her is asking quite a lot of money for her. She claims that the woman she bought her from said that she was simply molting. I have had English Budgies most of my life and have done some bird rescue. The woman has had her for a month and she has always been just down on her chest and belly. I saw no signs of pin feathers coming in anywhere and she was fully feathered on her back. I also thought it strange that after a month
