Sham lost by 2 lengths so said Chic Anderson the race caller. If thats accurate Sham time should be 1:59 4/5 which might be a tab better than Monarchos time of 1:59.97. Just barely under 2 minutes but still would be called as a 1:59 4/5 time. That would put Hill Rise the 5th fastest time not 4th.

Nothern Dancer was not a good horse but have to be said as a "Great Horse" on & off the field. Bold Ruler was also a great sire. Whether he was better than Nothern Dancer may be debatable.

Northern Dancer the greatest sire of the 20th century will never get the credit which is due to him because he was Canadian Bred. Sad but true. The field he beat in the 1964 Kentucky Derby was one of the toughest of all time. Hill Rise who lost to him by a neck ran the 4th fastest derby of all time and finished 2nd.After the Preakness they discovered a small crack in one of his hoofs. They fixed it and he still ran the Belmont but finished 3rd.Raced 18 times 14-2-2 .Never out of the money.

I agree with you the Dancer was a great horse, Did you know that Northern dancer was the great great grandsire of the sire and dam of Mind that Bird.

No he was definitely a GREAT horse. Just born in the wrong year....but, he was the only one who could make it a race (except the Belmont) running against Secretariat. Made the 1st two pretty damn exciting and he ran amazing times. HE would have been a TC winner w/o Big Red in there.

Am I the only person who feels sorry for Sham? He was a good horse, maybe a great one, but was racing Pegasus. I think he would have won the Derby and Preakness and maybe even the Belmont if he hadn't been contending with the greatest horse of the century.

I believe that Sham also broke the track record at the Kentucky derby in 1973......
Unfortunately for him he had to contend with Secretariat!

no your right any other year sham is an easy tripple crown winner without a doubt, but he had to race the most perfect horse God ever created so unforunately for him that is that.
