Capernaum (pronounced /kəˈpɜrniəm/ kə-PUR-nee-əm; Hebrew: כְּפַר נַחוּם, Kfar Nahum, "Nahum's village") was a fishing village[1] inhabited from mid 2nd century BC to 11th century AD. It is located on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Gallilee[2] and had a population of about 1,500.[3]
Recent excavations revealed that there were two synagogues in the village: the more recent was made of limestone and was built on top of the older, which was made of local black basalt. Only the foundation walls, some , and the cobblestone floor remain of the earlier structure.
A church near Capernaum is said to be the home of Saint Peter. When Jesus left Nazareth He settled in Capernaum where He chose His first four disciples; James, John, Peter and Andrew.
The town is cited in the Gospel of Luke where it was reported to have been the home of the apostles Peter, Andrew, James and John, as well as the tax collector Matthew. In Matthew 4:13 the town was reported to have been the home of Jesus. According to Luke 4:31-44, Jesus taught in the synagogue in Capernaum on Sabbath. Jesus then healed a man who had the spirit of an unclean devil and healed a fever in Simon Peter's mother-in-law. According to Gospel of Luke /Luke 7: 1-10, it is also the place where a Roman Centurion asked Jesus to heal his servant. A building which may have been a synagogue of that period has been found beneath the remains of a later synagogue.
Capernaum is also mentioned in the Gospel of Mark (2:1), it is the location of the famous healing of the paralytic lowered through the roof to reach Jesus.
Josephus referred to Capernaum as a fertile spring. He stayed the night there after spraining his ankle. During the first Jewish revolt of 66-70 Capernaum was spared as it was never occupied by the Romans.
כפר נחום היה יישוב בחופה הצפוני של הכנרת, לא הרחק מכורזים, בבקעת עין שבע. כיום האתר הוא גן לאומי.
ישו קבע בכפר נחום את מרכז פעילותו תקופה ארוכה, ואחדים מהשליחים (פטרוס הקדוש ואחיו אנדראס הקדוש, וכן יעקב בן זבדי ואחיו יוחנן) התגוררו במקום.
היינריך קוהל וקרל וטצינגר ערכו חפירה ארכאולוגית ראשונה במקום בשנת 1905, במסגרת הסקר המקיף שלהם על בתי הכנסת העתיקים בגליל. הם חשפו כמעט את כל האתר, אך משבקשו לחזור ולהשלים את חפירתם שנתיים לאחר מכן, סירבו האבות הפרנציסקנים לאפשר להם את הדבר, בטענה שיעשו זאת בעצמם. הפרנציסקנים היו אלה אשר שחזרו את בניין בית הכנסת.
כפר נחום מילאה תפקיד מרכזי בחייו של ישו עד כדי כך שלפעמים היא מכונה "עירו של ישו". כאשר עזב ישו את נצרת, הוא בא לכפר נחום: "ויעזב את נצרת ויבוא וישב בכפר נחום אשר על שפת הים..." (מתי ד 13). כאן, בכפר נחום ובסביבותיה, בחר ישו את 12 שליחיו הנאמנים
שרידי בית הכנסת שהתגלו בכפר נחום, לעומת זאת, מעידים כי זה היה מבנה מפואר ביותר. בניגוד לבתי הכפר הוא בנוי מאבני גיר מסותתות היטב. קירות החזית מגולפים בעיטורים מעולם הצומח והחי, ובעיטורים גיאומטריים. חלק מהעיטורים הם ממקור יהודי מובהק, כמו מנורה בת שבעה קנים החקוקה על כותרת קורינתית, ולצדה שופר ומחתה. תבליט מיוחד במינו הוא מרכבה הנושאת מבנה כלשהו, דמוי מקדש. יש הסוברים שזהו ארון הברית שנישא משדה המערכה נגד הפלשתים.
בית הכנסת ששרידיו נראים כיום בכפר נחום פעל בתקופה הביזנטית. לפניו היה באתר בית כנסת קדום יותר, שעל מועד הקמתו נטוש ויכוח אם נבנה במאה השלישית או הרביעית לספה"נ.
