That is possible true enough, but that doesn't seem like a very smart idea. Even with his natural Sith arrogance, i doubt he would have wanted to risk trying to take on the Jedi by himself. It would be more likely that he wanted to fight with his master to ensure victory, then take out his master another time. I think it was just luck that he managed to kill the Jedi 1v1 with his 'all out' attack, and kill his master at the same time.
