Robert Carl Cohen, NBC-TV Special Correspondent - China 1957, interviews James R. Lilley, CIA Operations Officer 1951-1978: Laos, Manila, Tokyo, Hong Kong; CIA Station Chief - Beijing 1975-78; Ambassador to South Korea 1986-1989; & Ambassador to China 1989-1991. Ambassador Lilley tells why, despite massive US assistance to Chiang Kai Shek's forces, the Communists took power in 1949. He discusses the failure of US paramilitary actions in Tibet in the 1950s; the results of Mao Zedong's "Great Leap Forward" & "Cultural Revolution" in the 1960s; how the "Ping-Pong Diplomacy of the 1970s was initiated by Nixon giving China US spy satellite photos of Soviet military installations; why Deng Xiaoping had to open China to capitalist investment & technology; the achievements of Jiang Zemin; the severe problems facing Hu Jintao; and the need for the US & China to cooperate with other nations in solving the economic, political & environmental challenges of the 21st Century.
A must-see for all those interested in US-Chinese relations.
