Recorded January 17-18, 2007.
The South Island is the larger of the two major islands of New Zealand, the other being the more populous North Island. The South Island is a somewhat larger landmass than the North Island, only about a quarter of New Zealand's four million inhabitants live in the South Island. However, in the early stages of European settlement of the country, the South Island was pre-eminent, with the majority of the European population and wealth focussed there due to gold rushes. It was not until the early 20th century that the North Island population overtook the South.
My road trip begins as I leave Fox Glacier and begin a two-day trek to Queenstown stopping at several scenic spots along way. The first three stops were along the Tasman Sea as I made my way to Haast. They were Bruce Bay, Knight's Point Lookout and Ship Creek. My last stop on day one was the very remote Jackson Bay. After spending the night in Haast I continued my journey the next morning and began traveling through the Mount Aspring National Park. There were three scenic stops there, Thunder Falls, the Gates of Haast and Fantail Falls. Mid way through the days travels I drove around beautiful Lake Wanaka and I stopped at Boundary Creek to take in the view. The last stops were just north of Queenstown at the Kawarau Gorge and the Roaring Meg Lookout.
