Ever notice how many games ans stories take place in a magical medieval world? I think we should give it a rest. So here's a list of 15 alternate settings that, for the most part, you can just swap for the Tolken inspired fantasy world that is so overused.

For extended text on this one follow this link:

Also, visit the Rampant Coyote blog for another perspective on the same thing (they beat me to the punch, tho not as styleishly)

  • You didnt mention the world war 2 era

there have been countless videogames about that

  • @SyntekkTeam Oh yeah. There's another one for the "setting's I'm getting tired of." A contender for #2.

  • wow you haven't made one in a while!

  • @W0lfbaneShikaisc00l I know, it has been a while. Well, I'm a busy guy.

At the time of the last one I had this one recorded. Since then I've recorded two others and written another two on top of that. So I've got others I want to do, it's just a matter of finding a couple of hours to finish them off.

I never promised I'd be regular or prolific. That's why subscriptions are good.

  • #5: Victorian GTA? Play as a gangster in 1890s London, New York City, etcetera.

#6: Let's hope RDR never dies.

#7: You actually made it pretty interesting. Sengoku Japan? Mount and Blade-esque in that you are attempting to climb the ranks of society, but with sandbox gameplay...'

    #8: Heck, I don't know. Medieval? Colonial?

#9: YES. Command your fleet and crime empire, or explore yourself.

#10: Absolutely, if done well. I'd rather see real Rome/Greece than mythological.

    #11: Absolutely not.

  • @MrJoeRants Add Russians to WW2. Once they realized that WW2 was so cliche, they switched to ridiculous games about Russia invading several decades to late. And, within a decade or so, it will all be about the Chinese and Muslims.

Why must it all come from modern politics? Have the USA vs India, the UK, France, or Brazil! Or go with alternate history; a CSA and USA fighting in the modern day!

  • North America before colonisation

Or make the game in the fantasy world about, you know, real people and not the "one hero who has the power to solve everything by making it explode"...you could be a farmer working the land in feudal hungary (or something...seriously, why is all fantastical settings set in what appears to be england) attempting to eke out a living under the rule of your oppressive lord!

  • @MrJoeRants well at least you uploaded something... I was beginning to think my subscription box was broken

  • One genre I hardly see any of is the American Revolution and Civil Wars except for strategy games. I know it would be a hurtle to work with the old guns but I always thought it could be awesome to see Gangs of New York made into a game. That's definatly a mythology; Bill the Butcher rules over the gangs and your out to get vengence. Or maybe we could see something like a Slave escaping from his farm to reach up North using the underground railroad.

  • I agree, the fantasy middle-ages setting is way too overused. There's a ton of other fun gimmicky settings , but people choose to stay in the middle earth despite how generic it is. You need to make these rants more often :D

  • About time someone said this, ALMOST all MMO's I've seen are just, overused wizard/knights.

I wanna see more Sci-Fi, The old Republic for example!
