Places like Japan and South Korea seem to have a fetish for high-heels and miniskirts. Maybe these things are attractive because they kind of make their wearers look taller? By contrast, high-heels and miniskirts are not as high in demand in America.
Trash cans. I once heard that the reason for the lack of trashcans along the streets in Japan is to maintain a shortage of trash cans which will then make people be more careful about making mess.
