David Gordon (John Cusack), un escritor de ciencia ficción que ha enviudado recientemente, está considerando adoptar a Dennis (Bobby Coleman), un pequeño niño huérfano que dice ser de Marte.

Está basada en el cuento El Niño Marciano (The Martian Child, 2002) escrito por el talentoso escritor de ciencia ficción David Gerrold por el que obtuvo los premios Nébula y Hugo.

Gerrold's novelette The Martian Child won both Hugo and Nebula awards.
