Summary: This tribute took FOREVER to make, due to Sony Vegas crashing and refusing to render. The end is rushed. I know this. 4 weeks later I just wanted to be done. No plot to this, and since it's a tribute to the new!trek canon there is only one official pairing (Spock/Uhura) but I'm sure by now y'all know my feelings and can probably see some others if you squint. I made this to answer a rant I read about someone hating New!trek. This person accused JJ of destroying the characters we all know and love by making them unrecognizable, and flat, and that JJ committed the ultimate WTF by destroying the epic bromance between Spock and Kirk.

My response. *blink* Yes. He did change the characters. That's the whole point of alternate reality. Example A. Mirror verse is an Alternate Universe within the original universe we all know. Notice how Mirror!Kirk and Kirk are two VERY different individuals while still having some core similarities? Notice how Mirror!Kirk and Mirror!Spock did not have the same relationship as Kirk and Spock did? Why is this class? Can anyone tell me?

BINGO. They're different people despite the fact that they are the "same person".

It would be CHEATING for JJ to create an alternate reality where everyone was exactly what they were like before. There's no reason to it, because we are always in part a product of our environments. Different reality = different Kirk. But Whyyyyy (you say). Why couldn't he have just made a straight up prequel and kept things the same?

Because it would SUCK. Asking a bunch of modern actors who only remotely resemble our original favorites to somehow copy actors like Shatner and Nemoy and satisfy us would BOMB and we all know it. The crazy thing is a lot of directors try and do stuff like that all the time and it does bomb and we all grumble (and pay to see it anyway). JJ actually got his thinking cap on. Isn't this what makes sci-fi so fun? Black holes, and AU's and all that good stuff. And he doesn't just run away with the AU thing, he keeps it gritty, and the characters are still somehow the characters we love while embodying everything that makes an Alternate reality so much fun to toy with. Flat? What movie were you watching?

And i adoreee how the voiceovers revolved around the "changing history" theme! That was just genius! Oh wow, I teared up.

During the movie I felt so bad for Chekov when he couldn't lock on to Spock's mom and she died. I mean, it wasn't his fault that the planet collapsed and the fell, but I would have felt super guilty too.
