  • IBM POWER systems are amazing, but it's amazing how long it takes them to boot up on average! Even recent and fast POWER4 and POWER5 systems. I guess it has to do with the whole service processor setup, the fairly complicated bootloader and all the startup diagnostics. Once running, you have something really nice and something you won't really need to reboot much!

  • @eMGeeGFX tru that we have power6 and power7 and they still take a while to boot

  • I have a question. I i have a J50 7013 RS/6000 enterprise server at home (for learning purpose) and it does not have the operating system on it. I do have AIX 5.1 CD set. How do I make it boot from the CD-ROM drive so that I can install the OS?

  • can you see the CD rom in the SMS menu via a rs232 cable (9600,n,1) in the serial port?

You then select the cdrom as the boot device from the SMS menu

  • I am not sure. I will give it a try. When I start the system, I should have the key on service?

  • yeah if that gives you the sms menu, if its got a kbd you press 1 or 4 or something
