JOSEPH SHORE--Excerpts from arias or songs where I, a Verdi baritone, sing High A flat all the way up to High D above High C. This posting is mainly for fun.
My high D "from the chest" is the highest note, non-falsetto, recorded by a Verdi Baritone to my knowledge.

What is a "Verdi Baritone"? It is a special voice which is able to sing the baritone roles written by Verdi in a style, manner and voice appropriate for Verdi. THe Verdi Baritone Voice is comfortable singing for long periods of time in the range for E flat above middle C to High A above middle C. The timbre of the voice must be rich and round to be appropriate. Today there are light lyric baritones even at the Met, inappropriately singing Verdi. In my interview with Jerome Hines published in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Journal, Hines said, "when I came to the Met, Robert Merrill and Leonard Warren sounded more like basses than most of the basses you hear today. Take Lawrence Tibbett. He had a big, world-class sound. It was a richer, heavier sound by far than what you hear from baritones today." That describes a Verdi Baritone.
