This is one of many classes led by Billy Martin, best known as drummer with Medeski Martin & Wood. Clave pattern to follow (on cowbell) is x . x . x x . x . x . x This particular class is focusing on Yoruban rhythms assigned by Billy.
Yoruban Game is part of a series called Stridulations for the Good Luck Feast now available in the score pack at http://www.billymartin.net
The students are encouraged to improvise by choosing any pattern from Billy's list. Students have the option to play, repeat, not play, or group together various combinations as a collective exercise. Students from left to right clockwise: Andrew McAuley, Leif Arntzen, Miles Arntzen, David Freeman and Billy Martin. Riddim classes focus on interplay, polyrhythms and collective improvising. Some of it-not always driven by a pulse. Sometimes the class will focus on textural sounds and form with no metronomic pulse. Often, students get to experiment with Martin's "Stridulations" percussion compositions which includes all of these concepts.
