When you're going up against arguably, the best pitcher in the state, you know you're probably not going to get as many scoring chances as you usually do. You also know you better shore up the defensive side of the game if you have designs on winning. Once again defense turned out to be the Spartans' nemesis last Thursday as they dropped a 10-4 game to Middleton.
Spartan pitching, led by Jess Eichorst, Mike Moss and Cory Newburg gave up only three earned runs, but eight errors led to seven un-earned runs that Memorial could not recover from.
Eric Fruhling and David Luciani had two hits each, and Mark Pokriefke doubled to lead the offense. The Spartans actually out hit the Cardinals 8-7 but came up short in the column that matters most.
