A seminal work by Ronald M. Chase, M.D. entitled "Aftermath - A War Of Memories" chronicles this military psychiatrist's experience and observations treating combat veterans during the Vietnam War at U.S. Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Maryland from 1968 to 1973.

Dr. Chase was a formidable voice representing Vietnam veterans in the years that followed the war. In 1983 he established the first PTSD program at Lyons, Veterans Administration Hospital, New Jersey. In 1984 he organized a patient protest at the hospital calling attention to the lack of staff and funding for comprehensive treatment programs of veterans.

Dr. Chase was outraged at the inordinate number of suicides among soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan deployments. In 2008 he volunteered as a psychiatrist contractor to U.S. Army, Winn Army Community Hospital, Ft. Stewart, Georgia to implement his cost effective method of treating combat stress.
