I'll give it an "F" for effort ...

this is actually not a french horn, this is a german horn.
-
I would do anything to get that!

As a horn player thats is really cool :)

You should make a video of you playing it to we could hear what it sounds like
-

I can imagine this dude talking to his freinds when this convo comes up:
"So, what did you do over the weekend, man?"
"Oh, nothing much, I just carved out an instrument.
-
Impressive. I almost don't even care if it even plays or not.
-
can you actually play it?

not very good to tell you the truth. It marginally worked, and the valves do register different notes. As I build more instruments and experiment with different woods, I imagine I will eventually discover a combination that makes it sound better. But just refining my technique so I can build them with thinner tubes makes a big difference on sound.

Search youtube for 58scallop and you can hear the trombone I made.

I've been busy lately making a Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum out of wood. I'll post a video of it in a week, then I'll get back to the instruments.

If I had to guess, I would think that the same woods that have good sound quality for guitars would be also good for these, like redwood, cedar, and spruce. I'm doing an experiment now, I'm making a french horn out of wood that the dimensions of the insides of the tubing are perfect, but they travel through a cube of wood. It will look like a tissue box made out of wood with a flared bell coming out of the top. I'll post a video when it is done.

a professional played it for a short bit, it is quite muted but you can get different notes out of each valve. Search youtube for 58scallop and you can hear the trombone I made. I'm getting better each one I make. Some day I'll make the french horn again with the goal of having it more playable.
