What beautiful music these cats make together. I saw JJ at an ITA summer workshop in Nashville in the mid-1980s. A real gentleman. Christian Lindberg was also there. JJ said about Lindberg: "I'm sure glad that guy doesn't play bebop!"

until Watrous (played Bach) came along King was pretty much the standard for jazz work. great slides!

Conn also made a really good horn in their 6H and 5H with lightweight jazz slides.

most of them go along with the classic statement: " I play whatever's in my case or closest to my hand"

the story is that Urbie took every mpce known into a boat and threw them overboard one at a time and played the last one left.

the point being: play whatever YOU are comfortable with, not what anyone else plays.

Kai is more of a technician, very accurate, less "glitter" , but very good, by anybody's standard

I posted that comment before I got into Frank's music. Now, listening to it, J.J. was miles ahead of Kai in terms of virtuosity. Don't get me wrong. Kai's a great player, but J.J.'s in an entirely different realm of soloistic virtuosity.
