You're over my shoulder on a live gig with The Wayman Chapman Band, and here we're playing Wayman's "Stop-Go" arrangement of "I Got You." The band includes Wayman Chapman on guitar/vocals, Darrel Silvers on bass, Larry Knechtel on keys, Rodney Turner on percussion, and myself on drums. Enjoy! More of this nonsense at www.derekmunson.com!

  • Really nice mate. You're grooves are so strong and really smooth. I don't suppose you have any available notation for some of the grooves you are using?

  • Nope! Sorry, my friend. I'm sure I could write it out and post it somehow. Maybe I'll have to do a YouTube drum lesson on this video - I get asked lots of questions about the tom fills and grooves I did here - time to share the real deal with everybody, I think. ;)

  • Oh, and THANK YOU for the very nice compliments! :D

  • I can't stop watching this, my band is going to play this song. How do you do all the fluent rolls down the toms, how do you incorporate the bass drum in it. I can do heal toe so I can do doubles fairly easily but how did you practice this. Like the stuff you did with one hand around the toms and what you did at 1:39. Thanks man, your awesome.

  • Hey Mike! The fills are mostly just "linear" fills - meaning that no two limbs play at the same time. To practice linear fills, just break down every possible combination of hand and feet within any given number of beats. For example, let's look at sixtuplets: (R = Right, L = Left, F = Foot)

    R-L-F-F-R-L

    L-R-F-F-L-R

    R-R-L-L-F-F

    L-L-R-R-F-F

    R-L-F-R-L-F

    L-R-F-L-R-F

    R-R-F-F-L-L

    R-F-L-F-R-F

...and so on. Make sense? Message me if you nee help with this. :D

  • Hey Derek, I know we've talked on here before cause you're extremely cool enough to actually write back to your YouTube fans. Which I've been one of them for the longest. Haha! Anyways, I'm STILL using this exact same kit now in days! Yamaha Stage Custom Standard with 10" 12" and 14" toms and 17x22" kick... What kind of heads on your toms and kick? Both sides??

I see the top of toms are coated Remos maybe?

  • Hey! Thanks for the kudos! I'm a people person, so I always write back when I can. :)

Here, I used Remo Coated Ambassadors batter/Clear Ambassadors resonant on toms, FiberSkyn3 batter/Clear Ambassador reso on snare, and Aquarian Super Kick I batter/unknown smooth white reso on bass drum.

If you're looking for a killer head combination, go to Aquarian's website, look at my Artist page, and check out what I'm using right now - blows the Remo combos out of the water! :D
