Being shot in the ankle didn't make him mortal, as the movie version never was immortal. He was just skilled enough to never get wounded. He's never touched by any weapon, but if he was, it would have cut him. The Iliad doesn't include the death of Achilles.
No he was shot first in the ankle making him mortal, then he was shot in the chest killing him. I haven't read too much of the illiad so I don't know if Achillies was shot like that in there.
The movie was different. Notice how Achilles dies - he gets shot in the chest. The movie was intended to be a more realistic approach to the poem, as it was to be for more "modern" audiences.
